The Wiinstrument and OS X Leopard (New Release)

If you have an Intel mac and Mac OS X Leopard, we've got a new release of The Wiinstrument for you.

Download The Wiinstrument 0.2b1151 for Intel macs with Leopard here.

Like the last Windows release, this version is an in-between release on the way to version 0.3, aimed at people who switched to MacOS X Leopard lately. It's not working on PowerPC processors, but the next release should work on PPC again.

This build includes a new, experimental UI for the DrumStiicks (MIDI) mode, shown on the image above.

Have fun with it! :)

Update: It seems that this version works only on Intel machines with Leopard installed. We're working on a fix, till then, try one of the old versions that are mentioned in the comments...

Du hast OS X 10.5 und einen Wii Controller? Dann teste doch mal Wiinstrument. Die Software gibt es auch für Windows und ist eine reine Spass-Software. Aber es ist bestimmt lustig, so Musik zumachen. Links http://screenfashion.org/ [Read More]

Fraser John:

Can you please support the Gibson Guitar Hero wireless guitar controller which uses the classic controller gamepad interface?

Sorry, the classic controller interface is not supported yet. Maybe it will be supported in some future version, but don't expect anything. Maybe we will reconsider this again if someone buys us a Classic Controller for testing ;)

Yuri:

Thank you for this new release!

Unfortunately, doesn't work for me, as previous release did :-(

thanks

brett:

Does Wiinstrument support the use of two Wiimotes, instead of one wiimote and one nunchuk?

Thanks for your reports. As announced, this version is only an in-between-release and is only tested on Leopard.

If you need the app quickly, download the last version.

A version working on OSX 10.4 AND 10.5 on Intel AND PowerPC should follow soon.

Sorry for any inconvenience :)

brett: No, at this point of time, you have to use two instances of The Wiinstrument (on two macs) to achieve this, but I think that multi-Wiimote-support will be integrated in some later version.

Wes: Yes, you can control Ableton Live with it. Just use Ableton's MIDI input for this.

brett:

thanks for the response Sebastian. I look forward to multi-Wiimote support.

Also, are you going to allow more customization in terms of assigning notes and midi to various button.

Changing button-to-note assignment order is one of the features that is definitely planned for one of the next releases :)

Till then, you'll have to make use of the note shifting feature of The Wiinstrument (by pressing the Plus and Minus buttons) or to configure your sampler accurately.

Hi guys! Your software is awesome!! I love it, I have tried it using GarageBand and it sounds great!

Anyway, I have a suggestion. You should add in the Midi mode a crash sound!! That would be perfect.

Bye and thanks for your work! :)

Davids: Just scroll to the according pad ("Splash Cymbal" or "Crash Cymbal") by pressing the plus button a few times. Then assign it to a controller by pressing the button that is displayed below the pad. If you want to assign it to the Nunchuk, hold the B button at the same time. That's it — there you have your crash sound :)

graham:

i have had problems pairing my wiimote with using leopard on my macbook...jw are macbooks intel based? i have no clue on that one...mine's one of the 13" ones. to the best of my knowledge i thought it was just a problem connecting/pairing with bluetooth in leopard. did you guys somehow overcome this????

maybe you guys can help me. i ended up going back to 10.4.8 in order to use a software i use called the wii looping machine.

hmmm, any help would be appreciated.

Graham,

Yes, MacBooks are Intel based.

Have you removed all "Nintendo RVL-CNT 01" connections in your Bluetooth system preferences before starting The Wiinstrument?

You could also take a look on our Howto: http://screenfashion.org/2007/09/wii_remote_garageband.html

Hope that helps,
Sebastian

nobbystylus:

When playing in Midi notes with the Wii controller, it plays both a note on and a note off, meaning i get a little midi flam, which isn't great for drumming.

Is there a way to turn the note off, off?

thanks

This is no flam, but actually necessary--if The Wiinstrument wouldn't send a note-off instruction after every note-on instruction, many MIDI instruments would not work correctly.

As described in the MIDI standard, standard drum samples are triggered by sending very short notes. Normally, a MIDI percussion sampler plays whole samples even when the notes that it receives are shorter than the samples played.

Longer notes are normally used for playing melodic instruments, not for instruments with percussive character.

For now, you could try to correct the settings in your synthesizer or sampler to fix that (e.g. by playing around with ADSR envelopes, if existing).

I think there will be an option later to send longer notes when drumming, but disabling note-off instructions will definitely not be supported, as this would violate the MIDI standard.

Best regards,
Sebastian

brett:

Is it possible to change the velocity value, when you are on the screen that assigns midi notes to buttons on the wii

brett,

No, the velocity value is always somewhere between 40 and 128. If you need other velocity values or a general threshold above which notes should be triggered, you have to configure your sampler accordingly for now ;)

Regards,
Sebastian

Gor:

It is working on my Mac OS X 10.5.1
Thank you for this new release!
i love it

thanks for your work!

Gor

Garry Schafer:

Hey -
I can't get my wiiremote to be recognized; and looking at the garageband tutorial here:
http://screenfashion.org/2007/09/wii_remote_garageband.html

Well, I'm running leopard, and the leopard bluetooth system preference pane doesn't have any 'devices' tab to remove the wiiremote from?

Please, can't figure out how to pair the damn thing at all...I've even hit the sync button under the battery door, as holding 1+2 doesn't cause the leds to blink at all.

Can the actual wii be running interference?

Chris:

I'm having an issue connecting the wiimote to wiinstrumnet. I have a macbook pro with leopard. I deleted the bluetooth connections before trying but nothing seems to work. I can get it to connect to darwiin remote but not to this. Any help?

Thanks.

Yoyo:

Great great great! I'll manage to go live on stage with my band! :)

again GREAT job and greets from Italy!

Hey guys, im getting this error: NO MIDI DEVICES AVAILABLES, anybody know how to fix this?

Just look into our GarageBand Tutorial to set up a loopback MIDI device.

NeilS:

Wow, I'm just giving this a go for drumming (MIDI to GarageBand), and the concept is fantastic!

I'd love the ability to trigger more drum samples without pressing buttons (which I can't quite get used to! :D)

A suggestion: could the angle of the Wiimote affect the sound being played? For example, if the Wiimote was horizontal, it could play a snare, but if it was vertical, it cold play a crash cymbal.

(That could give quite a "real drumkit" feel if the Wiimote is sensitive enough to pull it off with the right feeling?)

Of course, if you can do this now, or there are any other ways to trigger more than two samples, and I'm missing them - pleeeeease do let me know.

Many thanks indeed,
NeilS.

Triggering multiple samples with one controller (and without buttons) is definitely planned for one of the next releases. Please be patient :)

bobby:

i tried using it and downloaded it like 20 times

i just cant seem to hear anything
every thing conects perfectly but i dont hear anything evn tho the screen is showning that i hit the loop

please email me as soon as posible

i accidently postd this before in the wrong article

hey i love this app!
would it be really hard to update the current beta to universal instead of just intel-only?

It would not be hard, but need some time. There are various linking problems with newer boost libraries...

If you want to try it yourself (or know someone who wants), I can send you a ZIP archive with the XCode project. Just send me a mail!
